Do you feel like you’re swaying, spinning, tilting, or generally off balance?
Do you feel like you’re swaying, spinning, tilting, or generally off balance? You could be suffering from vertigo. Vertigo most often the result of a problem with your inner ear. Let’s discuss the causes, symptoms, and the different kinds of treatment available.
The cause
- BPPV or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is a condition where miniscule pieces of calcium gather in the canals of the inner ear. This creates an issue for the inner ear since it sends signals to the brain about physical movements related to gravity. Essentially, the inner ear helps you keep your balance. Research suggests that BPPV might be connected to age, high blood pressure, Type II Diabetes, Osteoporosis/Osteopenia, and frequent falls.
- Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder. The build-up of fluid and pressure in the ear can give symptoms connected to vertigo along with a ringing in the ears.
- Vestibular neuritis, or labyrinthitis, is related to an infection in the inner ear. It can create inflamed tissue around the nerves within the inner ear that are vital to your sense of balance.
- Vertigo can also be connected to a head injury, neck injury, brain issues, migraine headaches, or medications that cause ear damage.
The symptoms
As mentioned before, spinning, tilting, or a feeling of being pulled in one direction are symptoms of vertigo. Other signs include imbalance and difficulty walking steadily, nausea, vomiting, jerking eye movements, sweating, headaches, hearing loss, or ringing in the ears. These symptoms can be momentary or last a few hours.
The treatment
The treatment for vertigo is dependent on what is causing it in the first place. A treatment performed is canalith repositioning maneuvers when the cause of vertigo is BPPV. These are specific movements used to reposition the calcium deposits out of the inner ear so they can be absorbed by the body and vertigo is resolved. For others, medicine may be the preferred treatment while in extreme cases and depending on the diagnosis, surgery may be required.
